The Sound of my Heart Book & Activities

Sound of My Heart with wands and crayon activities!

Sound of My Heart with wands and crayon activities!

The girls and I have had a lot of fun melting crayons lately to give new shape and life to what otherwise would be discarded pieces. This month we paired our new hobby with this adorable book, “The sound of my heart” by Emily Bannister. “The sound of my heart” is a sweet little book about a baby bunny who tries to sleep through a storm only to be kept up by all the strange noises that are occurring. Mama bunny reassures through explanation of each sound and ends with the ultimate comfort, the gentle PIT-A-PAT representing the song of Mama’s ever-loving heart.

Melted Heart Crayons Activity (yields ~20 crayons for $1)
I’m all about easy and affordable crafts. This activity not only was super simple to do with my 4 littles but also a great option to have your kids help with any party favors, DIY valentines, etc. For $1 you can buy a 36pk of Playskool crayons and melt them to make ~20 melted heart crayons! All within 20 minutes, whoop whoop! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 pk Playskool crayons (or any brand of assorted crayons)

  • silicon heart shape mold (one shown here)

  • baking sheet

  • *optional glitter

Steps:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF.

  2. Peel crayons and group by desired color combos. Recommend Playskool brand as they seem to be the easiest to peel but any work! Recommend grouping by color and its various shades but can also be a great opportunity to talk to littles about color combos, mixing, and reenforce the learning color concepts.

  3. Fill each mold to the top. Pieces don’t have to be super tiny, break to where they fit but don’t feel a need to make tiny, just enough to fill. For this mold 1-2 crayons per heart did the trick. Do not exceed to prevent any overflow.

  4. Optional if you wish to add any glitter sprinkle prior to baking at this point. I run a girl gang of 4 ages 5 and under so this is a mandatory step LOL

  5. Place mold on baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes at 350ºF.

  6. Remove and place tray in freezer for 10 minutes.

  7. As long as melt is no longer running the crayons are done! Remove from freezer and carefully remove from molds for new shapes! That’s it! Pair with a cute printable or coloring book!
